Before I begin what will be a careful and an extremely useless look into the movie, I would like to highlight something of great value and a greater purpose to us here. Tommy Wiseau, in his old little elaborate movie, dreamt and did it. How many of us actually go on to work for what we absolutely desire? He wrote, he believed, he acted, he believed and he directed and he believed. Mr. Wiseau spent 6 million of his mysterious cash to make a movie – I don’t know what he was expecting from. No one could foresee the cult status it went onto achieve. The movie never called for attention.
Respecting Tommy’s attempt to execute his vision doesn’t mean we will respect his vision itself. Its so bad, its good. Personally, I have never not liked a movie. Yes, I have often felt some movies are overrated but it’s still somebody’s vision and it makes a whole lot of sense to a certain part of this universe. For starters, I thought Goodfellas and Silence of the Lambs are both overrated (don’t kill me pls).
The Room is the story of Johnny (Wiseau), his fiancée Lisa and his best friend Mark. Surprise surprise surprise as Lisa likes Mark and they make out a lot of undesirable times on screen (a lot). Now this is just the first ten minutes of the movie and you are like “Wooah, so much information in just the first ten minutes I wonder what all will come up next”.
The remaining movie is just about Tommy talking about how Lisa is his ‘future wife’, Lisa talking about how she doesn’t “love Tommy. I love Mark.”, Mark talking about how “Tommy is my best friend” and random characters who have absolutely no importance in the movie talking about stuff which have absolutely no importance in the world. For example:
Tommy: “We got a new client, and the bank will make a lot of money.”
Mark: “What client?”
Tommy: “I cannot tell you. It’s confidential.”
Mark: “Aw, come on. Why not?”
Tommy: “No, I can’t.”
Tommy: “Anyway, how’s your sex life?
Random scenes like jogging in the park to playing catch ‘n’ catch for no more than 14 seconds in their tux come and go just like your understanding as to why you are still watching this.
BUT (and a big but there) just when you think that yes, the movie sucks but its boring too – there’s one character which will bring the life of it back to you. Not since Ryan Gosling in The Big Short have I ever focussed my every brain cell in every scene this character comes up in. And the character is none other than Denny – I don’t even know how to describe his relation to the other characters but the fact maybe he was just on the set at the right times. Denny is so relatable, its almost amusing. He’s probably one of the people who do not make out in the movie, not that he doesn’t like watching people do that.
All this being said, no I am not spoiling the movie for you. Nothing can spoil this movie more than the movie itself. And as I leave, I promise to be back writing about The Disaster Artist (hopefully good stuff), I am going to leave you with my favourite quote of all time.
PS: Though I desperately want you to see this movie because I want you to go through everything I did, I also know most of you won’t. So, here is my favourite Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailer of The Room.
